1. Who can use the Laptop Computers 4 Credit Trade-in Program?
Any eligible Penn State student, faculty and staff who is interested in trading in/recycling a qualified, personally owned laptop can participate in the Laptop Computers for Credit Trade-in program. The Program is NOT available for departmental machines.

2. What constitutes a qualified Laptop?
Only Laptops brought in to one of the Store locations (12 Willard Bldg or Ground Floor HUB) in current working order, and capable of running a diagnostic applet, may qualify for the Program.

3. How is the recyclable trade-in value determined?
Recyclable trade In value offers are based on the value of the major components contained within the laptop you are trading in. Missing accessories such as A/C adaptor, battery or bad/damaged LCD screen will reduce the amount offered. A diagnostic applet will be performed to identify the Laptop’s processor, memory and disk drive configuration to confirm their condition and enable us to determine its full recyclable trade-in value.

4. Does a slightly damaged product qualify for trade-in?
In order to receive the full trade-in value available, your product should be in current working order. However, some products may contain physical (scratched case) or functional defects and still qualify for some trade-in value. Estimated Laptop value is based on processor speed, hard drive, display condition and components (battery, A/C adaptor).

5. Do recyclable trade-in values ever change?
Yes. On a monthly basis, we will review the recyclable current trade-in value table and update it based on market conditions. Values change from time to time because technology prices decline over time.
As a consumer you might have noticed that today you can buy a PC with a faster processor and more memory at a lower price than one year ago. The value is derived from disassembling and reusing parts.
As prices of older models decline, so do the parts prices.

6. When do quoted trade-in values expire?
Customer Quotes are valid for 10 business days. After the 10 day period has expired, the
quoted value may change and it will be necessary to obtain a new quote.

7. What is the name of the 3rd party entity the Store is using for the Program?
The Store is using GreenSight Technologies to assist with the recyclable valuation determination for laptop trade-ins as well as providing an environmentally friendly way of disposing of outdated electronic equipment.

8. How does the Computer Store Gift Card process work?
Once your laptop trade-in has been accepted, a Store Gift Card will be issued to you immediately for the final recyclable value amount. Please consult a Store Associate for terms and conditions applicable to the Gift Card.

9. What happens to my old Laptop?
All laptops traded in to the Store will either be reconditioned or recycled via our 3rd party entity, GreenSight Technologies (a division of CP&S). GreenSight is a leading provider of consumer electronics service parts to large, independent service organizations. It is likely that your trade in will be disassembled into its major components and sold off as usable spare parts. Recycled equipment will be broken down into its raw material format and used to produce new materials. GreenSight employs a zero tolerance landfill policy.

10. Is there risk of identity theft if I recycle a laptop with confidential data?
The Store and the University are not liable for your personal or confidential data and recommend you backup and remove all personal files and sensitive data before electing to trade in your laptop. Once you elect to participate in the Program, you accept responsibility for the elimination of any proprietary or confidential information contained on any drive or memory of the trade-in laptop or peripheral device. Your laptop cannot be returned and all of your personal files and data will be lost. The destruction standards that CP&S utilize in the recycling process would make it almost impossible to recover any data.

11. In addition to laptops, is the Store recycling any other electronic products?
Yes. In addition to our Laptop Computers 4 Credit Program, the Store is going green and has added in-Store recycling of rechargeable batteries, cell phones and inkjet cartridges to our Computer Store Cares recycling efforts.
